The worst part of it is that the most expensive dress in your closet, which used to fetch you compliments and envious looks merely six months ago, seems to strain as you try to get into it. Obviously, it is not the fault of the dress. Thus, you need shapewear to wear it. Shapewear is often used because many feels that it helps them regain their lost confidence.

What is shapewear?

As the name suggests it is basically tight-fitting underwear. When you wear shapewear underneath your main external garment you will manage to look thinner, and more firmly built. There are different types of shapewear that serve different purposes, and some types are also designed to be multipurpose. Basically, the flab resides in areas such as the arms, belly, breasts, hips, the lower back, and the thighs.

Different types of shapewear for different parts of your body

The breast -

Your breast may look heavier too, and your breasts may sag a little. There are brassieres that support your breasts and lift them up, enabling you to look much better in the chest area. The traditional brassieres also serve the same purpose, but these are firmer and tighter.

The arms -

In the case of your arms, you would need something that is more elastic to wear, and that yet, does not show that the muscles there have not been exercised by forming those uneven bulges.

Usually there are long sleeved garments that serve this purpose, and these are naturally worn externally.

The legs -

Stockings were used to cover the calf and thigh, and they still serve the same purpose. So, if you are not happy with that unshapely calf muscle, try stockings or even leggings. Leggings tend to be more reliable for the purpose.

The tummy -

The most complex types of shapewear are those that are used to hold back the tummy and thighs. Such tummy tuckers can best be described as the contemporary versions of the corset, or perhaps a type of corset. The tummy tuckers vary in designs, some reaching right up to the brassiere and are even combined with brassieres to form those bodysuits. Once you have found the right one for you, you will realize that you do not have to consciously hold back that tummy inside, and feel breathless every time you do so. Your dress would also fit nicely as a result.

Hips and lower back -

There are knickers and panty hoses qualifying as shapewear because they make the hips and lower back seem firm and rounded, narrower, and well-shaped, while also lending firm support wherever needed. Some of these cover your thighs as well and let you get into those jeans that are refusing to move upwards.

Materials used for shapewear

Basically, shapewear garments are generally made from quality elastic materials and spandex, so that they can make your body behave. The elastic in these garments does not lose its elasticity very easily. Nowadays, the materials used to make shapewear are well researched into, and importance is placed on the need to allow the skin to breath, so discomfort is reduced considerably. By selecting the right size, it is possible to be comfortable in it, even with the elastic material holding back the flab more firmly than the conventional elastic. The design and positioning of the elastic, as well as its strength, play an important role in making such shapewear effective, for a long time.

Is shapewear uncomfortable to wear?

To an extent yes, it is. But certainly not as bad as what Scarlett O’Hara had to do to make her waist seem smaller. Think about it; you exercise, and that is a pain. You diet, and that is a pain. The results take much longer to appear as well. In contrast, shapewear gives you those results within a few minutes. So, this discomfort is worth the gain! On the whole you could look as if you’d lost a couple of inches overnight, and there would be no unsightly uneven bulges that may otherwise be noticeable, in your tighter garments. The buttons would close easily, and so will the zippers.

Shapewear: Are the results permanent?

The manufacturer would want you to believe that the results are permanent, so there would be claims that regular usage can increase the heat at the location and melt that fat down. This will presumably make the fat flow out. Theoretically, this does seem rather logical. There are studies that suggest that results are permanent, and that such a reduction of inches is a temporary phenomenon.

In other words, the results are inconclusive. Even so, buying shapewear is still worth it, because without it, that expensive dress which makes you look like a sultry, seductive, siren cannot be worn!

ls shapewear alright for health?

If you select the right size, there would be no reasons to experience any health problems. Some people do go overboard by opting for sizes that are much too small for them, and that can lead to some health issues, though not always. Likewise, these garments are not to be used 24/7, so you might want to restrict their usage to when they are needed.

How to select a shapewear?

There are many things which are worth taking into account when buying shapewear.

a. Select the right sized thigh tighteners or belly flatteners. If the size seems a bit small for you, it probably is. You don’t want to look uncomfortable wearing it, or experience any problems thereafter.

b. Select the material that you are comfortable in. If you are more comfortable with cotton, go with it. The elastic in shapewear is interwoven with the strands of the chosen material with more concentration in some parts.

c. Don't expect miracles. Till it is conclusively proved and accepted by an authoritative body like the US FDA, do not accept that wearing shapewear regularly will reduce those two extra inches.

d. Stick with well-known brands such as Spanx, Assets, and “Dr Rey”.

e. Read through some reviews as well, because they will indicate whether this product is good or not.

f. Oh the price! It is not always the case that the higher the price is, the better.

g. Remember to change the size, once you put on some more weight. Even if it means wasting the ones you’d previously bought.

Shapewear: The confidence instiller

More than others, it would be you who would be surprised to find about two inches gone off your waist instantaneously, when you wear these constricting undergarments. As if that was not enough, your hips and thighs would look firmer and well sculpted, giving you the quintessentially feminine look to die for. Yes, you are beautiful, and you always were. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise! But shapewear can indeed make things a bit simpler and better for those who lack confidence because of their body fat.
